General VENIS Interoperability and Collaboration Scenario.
VENIS seeks to enhance cooperation and interoperability between enterprises, focusing on cooperation of large enterprises (LEs) and small enterprises (SMEs) both at data exchange level and process level.
Large enterprises usually handle business document in more formalized way. An ideal case of interoperability between LEs is the exchange of business data via standardized documents (e.g. CoreComponents, EDI, ebXML). However, in the case of SMEs, the situation is very different. SMEs often handle business documents as human readable documents (e.g., doc, PDF).
By using the VENIS Services, the Adapter will store this document into the VCR and the VCR will signal the upload of a new file to the Inter-layer event log. Then, the Process Services are triggered by this VCR event and will start the procedure (previous modeled) in order to send an e-mail to the SME employee containing the token for this document. The SME will receive the token and will have access to the business object/document with its lightweight semantics, in order to process it as in the first case.
The fixed working procedures driven by the legacy applications are missing in SMEs. These are replaced by the SME employee's decisions and actions, taken according to the usual, and not written, way of working.
In this frame, the business process services of the VSI (BPH) supports the SMEs along these unwritten procedures: the working steps are first modeled and then executed. The BPH supports the activation/termination on event, the steps control and the synchronization with the LEs procedures driven by their legacy applications.
